Are Dense Cities More Sustainable? © UiD 2009
Article published in Arkitekten # 12 2009

Inside the car you are protected from the noise, the humidity, the pollution and the extreme temperatures. You can listen to relaxing music and control the temperature yourself. But the more cars the more hostile the outside environment becomes, thus provoking more even people to get a car.

The Social City – A Global Vision © UiD 2008
Article for DAC News

Sustainable Urban Development - IFHP Ranko Radovic Student Competition
Henrik Valeur’s own comments as a juror. Published in Futures of Cities ISBN 978-87-87136-81-5

It is really quite simple. We - the rich - have to share our wealth with the poor if we want to revert the current trend of massive environmental destruction and climate change.

Urban Regions © UiD 2005
Paper for the UIA XXIInd World Architecture Congress in Istanbul.

According to the UN, 3/4 of the population of the industrialized world live in cities, but these are not necessarily cities in the traditional sense. People may choose to live in rural settings, while still having direct access to most urban facilities.

Introduction to the catalogue A NEW FUTURE FOR PLANNING ISBN 87-990146-5-3
Publisher: The Architectural Magazine B

Maybe the planning of the 21st century does not (only) have to be about regulations and restrictions. Maybe the loss of power of the traditional planner isn't such a bad thing after all. Maybe it is the beginning of a new future for planning.

The Diagram © UiD 2001

Looking at film footage and development schemes documenting the suburbanization around Copenhagen during the late 60’s and early 70’s, it is striking to see how directly principles of temporal organization were transformed into principles of physical organization.

I am sitting in a house in the suburbs talking with a woman who has asked me to design a house for her somewhere else in the in suburbia. She is quite ordinary and the job seems straightforward. But I quickly discover that I can not govern her everyday life and that she would never live the way I had in mind. I also realize there are no authorities I can turn to for advice on how this house should be designed; least of all her, because she is never the same.

non-city © UiD 1999

Hr O © UiD 1997
